Westchester, Illinois – Major Expressway Shutdown Disrupts Morning Commute
A major law enforcement investigation involving a suspected explosive threat brought Interstate 290 (I-290) to a standstill Thursday morning, triggering a massive traffic backup across Chicago’s western suburbs.
According to Illinois State Police, the investigation began around 10 a.m. and led to the closure of multiple lanes between 25th Avenue and Wolf Road. Authorities confirmed that both directions of the expressway were affected as a precaution while a specialized bomb squad unit from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office examined a suspicious SUV stopped in the roadway.
Eyewitness footage and aerial coverage from Chopper 7 revealed a heavily damaged SUV positioned in a middle lane, with its windows visibly blown out. The presence of the bomb squad intensified concerns among commuters and prompted immediate shutdowns across several connecting routes.
Officials reported that additional closures extended beyond I-290, including Mannheim Road over the expressway, sections of Mannheim Road leading to I-290, and the eastbound Interstate 88 ramp to eastbound I-290. These combined closures created severe congestion across surrounding highways and arterial roads.
Commuters described the situation as chaotic, with traffic stretching for miles as vehicles remained stranded or forced to reroute. Emergency personnel maintained a strong perimeter while investigators worked to determine the cause of the incident and ensure public safety.
As of the latest update, authorities have not released details regarding injuries, suspects, or the nature of the explosive concern. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident has caused one of the most significant traffic disruptions in the west suburban Chicago area this week, with officials urging drivers to avoid the affected corridors and seek alternate routes until the scene is fully cleared.
Further updates are expected as Illinois State Police continue their investigation.
